Art Galore at NUART Sculpture Park
When I was in Bandung I got a chance to visit an art park, a sculpture park to be exact and it was a great experience to see such beautiful sculptures and in a beautifully elegant building at most. I'm a sucker for artsy things and have a really deep love for art in this case, sculptures. There's still not many sculpture park in Indonesia so I considered it a unique kind of entertainment with a twist of artful fun.
NuArt Sculpture Park is located in Bandung, West Java and the place is quite big too. They have a 3 ha land to explore and there are so many rooms/sections you can take a stroll in without getting bored. This park was first opened to public in 2000 and it exhibits the work of Nyoman Nuarta starts from his beginning of career until his latest masterpiece. If you are an art lover, then this place is a must to visit at least once when you're in Bandung.
The place is really easy to find, it's located in a cluster area so the road is wide and smooth. When you got to the park gate, several sculptures then can be seen as you drive inside he parking lot which is a big one too especially when you come here on weekdays. Just when you get off your vehicle, you will see a unique architecture and some sculptures around it. The ambiance is calm and really great for you to just enjoy the art displayed in this park. The ticket price to enter this park is fairly reasonable too at Rp. 50.000 per one person which, in my personal opinion a real deal. There are some rule before you enter the park, you may take photograph even with your Mirrorless or DSLR camera but no flash allowed and no tripod too as that can disturb other visitors, well, let's get inside!
When you first get inside the building, you will get welcomed by death (a sculpture of course) doing her job to take people's soul. There are many other sculptures near the entrance and most of them is the huge one so you may want to take your pictures here as the sculptures inside is smaller compared to these ones. The sculpture is really detailed that you can see the texture which makes it more alive. This sculpture is one of my favorite masterpiece I've seen here until now.
The lighting inside the building is enough if not a little dim, but lighting also creates an impression and expression of the piece. When you got in deeper, you'll see more lights and more smaller art piece compared to what you found on the entrance except some of them inside is massive too.
My thought on the first step upon entering this gallery is kind of amazed but also already know what to expect when you enter the gallery. They got clean bathroom, the got this modern look, they got friendly staff, and they got plenty of great creations. most of the sculpture here is about an adult height, but some are smaller.
What I thought when I was hovering around the gallery is their consistency of concept; They display one artwork next to a similar one with the same concept that builds up the emotion and feels just like what they wanted us to see. Strolling in an art gallery can be tiring sometimes, and this one is a huge one at that; But not a single complaint was thrown from our mouth. The proportions of the art is perfect combined with an excellent space between each art which separates one from the other so you can admire a specific artwork before moving on to the others. What makes the place comfortable is the high ceiling that makes the room looks bigger and spacious, and they make an artful ceiling too to match the concept.
What makes this experience complete is the presence of each of the sculptures' names and the year they were made. These kind of information brings a great impact to the visitor who is curious about an artwork, this small detail will give you the idea of the sculpture and make you wonder what is the backstory of each artwork; They of course also without you noticing takes you back in time to understand the art better.
Just as you expected of art, some of the sculptures are abstract in concept which leaves you alone pondering what is the message behind it. If you're an art lover and enthusiast then you're lucky to see these beautiful abstract piece but often people just can't understand the meaning; At least they compliment the work though.
the gallery is a two level building, each floor gives you different vibes. The building itself is not too big but also not narrow to begin with. You start on the bottom floor then you move up to the top, but after you reach the end of the top floor there will be a stairway for you to descend to the bottom floor again but in different section of the gallery this time. You will notice the flow of the gallery after some time and will also see the difference between the sculpture upstairs and the one below.
After you finished with the one inside the building, you might as well go outside the building and see (and admire) the sculptures outdoor. most of the one outside is bigger then the former and the placement is quite interesting too. From here on, you can explore on your own and decide which sculpture do you want to see first or which area you want to stroll around.
The park total space is really big and spacious that I honestly not able to explore 100% of what's available at that time, plus they still going with the construction and stuff so what I wasn't able to explore is not even 100% of what they intended to complete. In my opinion, the park is excellent and giving me the artful vibes too; For you who loves to take a picture or just like to see art, this place is definitely for you. I love how they welcomed us, I love the way the place the sculptures, and I love having my memories of exploring this gallery with my sister.
There are still many places that I've never been and it appears that I hope I will be able to see it all, especially the one that I wouldn't expect that particular thing to be like. For my next journey I will write more about interesting places, so for now let's head to the Tavern!
